Perched on dramatic cliffs along Northern Ireland’s Antrim Coast, it has a history as striking as its views. Dating back to the 13th century, the castle was primarily inhabited by the MacDonnell clan from Scotland in the 16th and 17th centuries, who were involved in many power struggles over the years.
The castle is steeped in stories—some say it’s haunted by the ghost of a servant girl who fell to her death, while others tell of its kitchens supposedly plunging into the sea during a storm. Dunluce’s stunning ruins and coastal views have even inspired authors and filmmakers; it’s rumored to be part of the inspiration behind C.S. Lewis’s Cair Paravel in The Chronicles of Narnia.
